Three Steps to a Happier Workday

A happy workday is a healthy workday and this seeps into your mood for the rest of the day. Get your workday right and you will be on your way to a happier, healthier life overall. When it comes to boosting the happiness of your workday, there are three considerations and steps you should take: physical space, mindset, and energy. Start transforming each of these areas for a happier workday!

1. Physical Space
Tackle the tangible things first. Your physical space is a tangible object that you can begin working on to improve your workday happiness. Here are a few ways you can transform your physical space:

a. Your Office Space  –  Create an atmosphere that you enjoy working in. What makes you smile? What lightens your mood? Include these things in this space. This is a place where you likely spend most of your time, so be sure it is somewhere you can enjoy.

b. Staying Full and Hydrated  –  When in doubt, check to make sure your body’s needs are satisfied. Have you eaten a meal lately? Are you drinking water? Prioritize these things and avoid skipping meals to keep your mood lifted all day long.

c. Say “Thanks”  –  Hang up a list of at least three things you are grateful for. Whenever you read this list, you will be reminded of positive, uplifting things in your life.

2. Mindset
Though not always as simple as the physical space, changing your mindset can greatly impact your overall happiness. Give these tricks a try:

a. Sense of Meaning  –  Find something that you love about what you do. While you may not like your job overall, find at least one or two things you can enjoy about it and focus on these things while at work.

b. Focus  –  It is easy to get overwhelmed when managing multiple tasks. Stick to one task at a time to find relief in the small accomplishments you make. Also, do not compare yourself to others or think about challenges you face at home. This will make your workday much more manageable and happy!

c. Take a Break  –  Give your mind some relief, especially if you are feeling down. Get up and do something else, switch tasks, or find some comedic relief on the Internet.

3. Energy
Change your energy to change your day. Embrace positive energy for happiness throughout your workday. Here are a few tips on how to do so:

a. Engage with Co-Workers  –  Chatting with someone else, whether on a break or for work purposes, can bring life to your day and improve your happiness.

b. Smile More  –  Do not be afraid to flash that grin throughout the day. Especially when you are feeling down, even a forced or fake smile has been shown to release endorphins. Give it a try!

c. Change Up Your Routine  –  It is easy to get stuck in the rut of the day-to-day work routine. If you want to be happier at work, try changing up your routine. Think about what you dislike about your work day and do your best to make a transformation to avoid these things.
